Want to be festive, but planning on staying in on Halloween? Here’s a list of our favorite Halloween movies that are sure to make your night frightfully fun!
If you are looking for something the whole family can watch:
Corpse Bride (2005)
A sad story that ends happily with the understanding between worlds and the acceptance of what happened in the past is meant to be. Very hard not to fall in love with the quirky, yet charming characters. This is a personal go-to every year.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
What happens when three witch sisters are resurrected on Halloween night? I would love to tell you, but nothing can truly capture the essence of this classic movie. You will get to witness Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy at their absolute best (or maybe worst!) playing the intolerable, wicked Sanderson Sisters.
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
One of the only films to effectively combine Halloween and Christmas (the two best holidays, obviously!) whilst giving a love story between two tortured characters.
The Addams Family (1991), The Addams Family Values (1993)
The charming yet creepy Addams family has been around since the ‘60s, but this live-action version has gone on to be remembered in most people’s minds. Every year you are guaranteed to see a bunch of little girls in a Wednesday costume. These are personal favorites of mine and I'm definitely guilty of watching both movies all year long.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
As a child, this movie terrified me! Although it’s not technically a Halloween movie, most people associate it with the holiday. Maybe it’s the endless amounts of candy! If you have not watched this movie, I’d seriously recommend it. I remember my first time watching it with my parents, it truly is an experience and not just a film.
This next list is not for the faint of heart! If you want to be spooked and spill your popcorn, this list is for you:
Halloween (1978)
The scream queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis stars in what is now credited as one of the “Golden Era” slasher films. This movie is one I avoided for years because I was to scared to even look at Michael Myers. I sure was missing out! If you can handle the scare, this is the movie to watch!
The Shining (1980)
Is Halloween, Halloween without a movie adaptation of a Stephen King novel? Although the author himself was not a fan of this movie. The film has maintained a prominent fanbase and comes up on almost every Halloween movie list.
Carrie (1976)
This is another adaptation of a Stephen King novel. Carrie is an odd girl who realizes she has powers. Things go wrong when she uses these powers against the people who have done her wrong.
Poltergeist (1982)
I don’t know how this movie was allowed a PG rating back in the 80s. Even as an adult it spooks me. Unlike the very common theme of a serial killer, we are presented with what happens in the supernatural.
Scream (1996)
Scream revitalized the slasher genre in the 90s and took the cliches found in previous scary movies and utilized them in a satirical way. The Ghostface is one of the more recognizable Halloween costumes and has been a staple since this movie came out.
Halloween doesn’t always have to be a night out! Enjoy some time at home with loved ones, a significant other, or even friends and don't forget to check out our Haute Halloween Collection for some ghoulish looks for any occasion.
